How Tariffs Are Impacting Spawn and fly fishing —And What That Means for You
At this point, there’s no missing the news. Every day, we’re inundated with political headlines, economic forecasts, and heated debates from all sides. But here at Spawn Fly Fish, our mission hasn’t changed: we’re here to build innovative fly-tying products, grow an incredible community, and support your passion for fishing.
That said, we also want to be transparent about how the recently announced tariffs could affect all of us in the fly fishing world—especially small shops like ours.
Let’s break it down simply.
In the short term, I think the hardest hit will come at the beginning. For our own Spawn-branded products as of right now, there are no price increases planned. But with the market shifting daily, we can’t guarantee it’ll stay that way forever.
The real challenge lies in restocking products from other brands. Several of the vendors we work with are adjusting their pricing due to the tariffs. As a small business, our budgets are tight—so when the cost of goods increases, the number of units we can afford to bring in decreases. Sure if we sell it for more then we would have more money to stock products but we have to buy the inventory first and inventory is always a risk! This can delay new product releases, limit what’s available on our site, and force us to make tough decisions about where our dollars go.
Will Prices Go Up?
Unfortunately, yes. Two of our largest vendors have already raised their prices, and were updating more than 2,000 unique SKUs to reflect those changes. And this is likely just the beginning.
We know fly fishing isn’t a cheap hobby. Price increases aren’t just hard on us they’re hard on you. If everything costs more but your income stays the same, hesitation is natural. We get it and we plan on surviving and thriving.
Is There a Silver Lining
Quite a few of the products we sell aren't form China so there hasn't been a jump for many of the brands we carry.
The other very hopeful upside of these tariffs may be a slowdown of overseas sellers on platforms like Amazon and TEMU. Many of these vendors offer cheap, competing fly-tying products that don’t support our industry or communities. If those become less accessible due to trade restrictions, it could in theory drive more anglers back to local fly shops and small businesses like ours.
But let’s be honest—this is very speculative and has not happened at all. What’s not speculative is our commitment to you and this community.
Here’s What You Can Count On
