Classic patterns that call for wood duck

Barred wood duck is the flank fiber on several Eastern dry-fly and soft-hackle standards. Reach for it when the recipe names wood duck, lemon wood duck, or barred flank.

• Hendrickson: wood-duck flank for wings and a soft collar when you want mottled tips instead of a solid quill slip.
• Quill Gordon: classic barred flank wings; wood duck reads closer to the natural than mallard dyed lemon.
• Soft hackles and wet flies: a few turns of barred fiber as a sparse collar or cheek.
• Nymph legs and wing cases: short barred tips when a pheasant-tail or hare's-ear variant wants more mottling.

Wood duck vs teal vs mallard

Barred wood duck for wings, cheeks, and soft-hackle accents when you want that mottling. Teal or green-winged teal if you want similar barring in another color or price. Mallard flank for a broader soft hackle or when the pattern just says "flank" without naming wood duck. Super Select is sorted barred fiber, not a whole skin.

How we source and sort Super Select

We grade barred wood duck in the Ilwaco shop. Usable bar length, even mottling, and fibers you can strip without wasting half the bag. Select packs are for tiers who want clean fiber without buying a full flank skin. Compare pack vs bulk in Select vs bulk wood duck feathers.
