Simplifying Chum Fry Season: Effective Patterns for Western WA

Simplifying Chum Fry Season: Effective Patterns for Western WA

Welcome back to the blog, where we dive deep into the hatch and all things fly fishing! Chum fry season is upon us, offering a thrilling time for anglers in Western Washington. We got out this week and put to work countless flies and found so much success. As the cutthroat eagerly strike, it's a prime moment to simplify our approach and focus on what truly matters in this fishery.

We tie some intricate Chum Fry Patterns that are showcased on YouTube that everyone should have in there box. However, if you can't tie or your limited in what you can tie, the truth is, success often lies in simplicity. Here are several patterns that may not be specifically designed for chum fry but will certainly get the job done throughout the season:

  1. Spawn Simi Seal Leech: This fly embodies simplicity at its best. Crafted solely from Spawn Simi Seal, it's a breeze to tie and incredibly effective. Whether you're new to tying or a seasoned pro, this pattern is a must-have. Colors we recommend - Spawn Simi Seal Chum Fry, Polychaete, Salmon Smolt!

  1. Carey Special (Peacock Variant): Keeping it simple and highlighting a fly with a long history, the Carey Special in Peacock is a winner. Strip it fast, and you'll find the cutthroat eagerly adding it to their menu of chum fry.

  2. Soccer Mom (Thin Mint Variant): Rio's Soccer Mom pattern, especially in Thin Mint, proves its worth in SW Washington waters. Its simplicity belies its effectiveness, making it a valuable addition to your chum fry lineup. For the soccer mom we only recommend the Thin Mint color way for matching this hatch. All the other color ways are fantastic but are needed at different times.

  3. Woolly Bugger Variant (Olive with Black): As simple as it gets, the Woolly Bugger in olive with black is a timeless classic. This is one simple pattern that many of us know. This week we used the Stable Bugger (simple variant of a bugger) and it was frankly on fire. Opt for sizes 10 or 8 and strip it fast for irresistible action that the fish won't be able to resist.

Chum fry season presents an incredible opportunity for anglers, and you don't need to be a master tier to capitalize on it. Whether you lack the time or skills to tie intricate patterns, rest assured that these simple yet effective solutions are readily available at Spawn or for you to create yourself. For those of you eager for a challenge view and replicate some of our chum fry patterns on YouTube or create your own winners. No matter your preference get outside and fish!

2024 Steelhead Season in SW Washington - Look Back!

2024 Steelhead Season in SW Washington - Look Back!

As the steelhead season in Southwest Washington draws to a close, anglers find themselves reflecting on the highs and lows of chasing these elusive and powerful fish. For many, the anticipation leading up to that incredible moment of hooking into a steelhead is unparalleled, making every cast and every early morning wake-up call worth it.

This year, our steelhead season in SW Washington was nothing short of phenomenal. We embarked on our fishing adventures with a sense of excitement and determination, eager to explore new flies, tactics, and remote locations. And indeed, our efforts paid off as we experienced success in catching fish in various ways, each method adding a unique thrill to our angling pursuits.

One of the most memorable aspects of this season was discovering the hidden gems that exist when one is willing to venture far away from the crowds. These secluded spots not only provided us with incredible fishing opportunities but also allowed us to immerse ourselves in the beauty and serenity of nature, far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Of course, as with any fishing season, there were both highs and lows. We encountered moments of pure joy and exhilaration as we reeled in steelhead after steelhead, each catch filling us with a sense of accomplishment and awe. However, there were also instances of frustration and disappointment, particularly when faced with the unforgiving nature of the river and its many obstacles, such as submerged logs and unpredictable currents. One log in particular was responsible for losing over 5 fish by itself!

But such is the nature of steelhead fishing – it is a sport that can simultaneously fill your heart with joy and rip it out of your chest. Despite the challenges, the thrill of pursuing these magnificent fish keeps us coming back season after season, eager to experience the highs and lows all over again.

As we bid farewell to another steelhead season, we look forward to the days ahead spent at our vises, meticulously tying flies in anticipation of the rivers reopening in May. It's a time for reflection, preparation, and excitement for what the next season will bring.

So here's to another season of steelhead fishing in SW Washington – may it be filled with unforgettable moments, thrilling catches, and the camaraderie of fellow anglers. Until then, tight lines and happy tying!

Navigating Opening Weekend: Jetty Fishing and Safety First

Navigating Opening Weekend: Jetty Fishing and Safety First

As spring approaches, anticipation builds for avid anglers who relish the thrill of opening weekend for bottom fish off the jetties here in Washington. For those who have spent countless summer days casting lines off the rocks, the season's kick-off is a momentous occasion marked by excitement, and the promise of fresh fish tacos. However, as the calendar flips to the early fishing season, it's crucial to be aware of the unique challenges and potential hazards that come with it. In this blog, we'll delve into the joy of opening weekend jetty fishing while emphasizing the importance of safety.

For many enthusiasts, jetty fishing is more than just a hobby – it's a way of life. Its an easy place to fall in love with. The thrill of landing a variety of rockfish on the fly rod creates lasting memories. Not to mention the surrounding environment with birds, otters, pesky raccoons, porpoises, sea lions and every now and then a whale! The opening weekend signifies the beginning of another season filled with amazing memories!

While the excitement of opening weekend is undeniable, it's essential to acknowledge the unpredictable nature of early spring weather. The transition between seasons can bring sudden changes, turning a clear sky into a stormy spectacle. Moreover, the swell can become treacherous, posing risks to even the most seasoned anglers. Being prepared for these fluctuations is paramount to ensuring a safe and enjoyable fishing experience.

Safety Tips for Opening Weekend:

  1. Check the Weather Forecast: Before heading to the jetty, stay informed about the weather conditions for the day. Keep an eye on updates, paying special attention to wind speeds, precipitation (rain makes the rocks very slippery), swell and any potential storms.
  2. Wear Appropriate Gear: Dress in layers to combat fluctuating temperatures. Wear non-slip footwear to maintain stability on the rocky terrain.
  3. Bring Safety Equipment: A life jacket is never a bad ideal also a first aid kit, a whistle, and a flashlight, and lastly your phone. In case of an emergency, having these essentials can make a significant difference in ensuring a swift and effective response.
  4. Be Mindful of the Swell: Keep a close eye on the swell conditions. If the waves appear formidable, exercise caution and reconsider your fishing plans. It's better to prioritize safety over a risky adventure any day. We mean it! Don’t push it, our jetties are unforgiving here in the PNW especially our local North Jetty.
  5. Fishing Buddy System: Whenever possible, fish with a buddy. Having a companion increases safety and provides mutual assistance in case of unexpected challenges.

As opening weekend for jetty fishing beckons, let the excitement of the season mingle with a strong commitment to safety. The thrill of landing that first catch should be complemented by a sense of responsibility, ensuring that every angler returns home with a tale of triumph rather than an encounter with danger. Embrace the adventure, respect the power of the elements, and make safety a non-negotiable aspect of your opening weekend ritual. Here's to a season filled with memorable catches, cherished moments, and the camaraderie that makes jetty fishing a beloved pastime!
